The Importance of Being Green

As an English teacher of our school, I am very pleased to present some concrete poems written by my 3rd ESO students. Concrete or shape poems take the form of the subject of the poem, it consists in drawing and shaping a picture with your words. Words that communicate a message in both, a lyrical and a quite critical way.

I think they are very special poems because they deal with a controversial topic, Ecology and because they are the result of boosting our students´ imagination and creativity. The aim of the activity was to improve my students´ writing and approaching them to literature. As we were working on ecology we used it as the leading topic of the poems. Students reflected on the importance of having an ecological active attitude and wrote these artistic poems, they prove that whatever moves your heart will make a wonderful poem. Literature has the power of making us be more sensible and open to ideas and feelings just with the magic words.

It is most remarkable the way all learners got involved in the topic, they observed their reality and became well aware of the benefits of being environmentally friendly.

I believe as David Orr said, all education is environmental education. That is the path we all have to follow in order to preserve our wonderful fragile world.
